At our last class meeting at the Fire Training Center, Paul Trumpore gave us an excellent presentation on Fire and it's birth and how to kill it before it grows. He recommended that everyone have a 2A ABC Extinguisher in their homes. He also recommended having a Gas/Water shutoff tool available. While not everyone has gas, maybe your neighbor does, so it would be a good idea to have both tools handy. There are some excellent ones available at an inexpensive price (check out 4 in 1 Emergency Tool) that do both gas and water and are light enough to carry in the CERT pack.
Paul also highly recommended doing a Power Audit around your house. looking for corroded power cords or outlets with too many extension cords or plug adapters. Checking wall warts for overheating is also a good idea, and make sure the power cords do not touch anything nearby that could catch fire.
He also reiterated the importance of making sure you, and all of your family members know where to shut off the gas and water in your house in an emergency. That, as well as knowing the major exit routes in case of fire or smoke in the house.
Checking batteries on and testing smoke detectors and CO2 detectors in the home should be a routine task as well. Smoke detectors should be replaced at least every 10 years. CO2 detectors usually wear out in 5-7 years.

Something that struck home with me was not leaving your dryer going while you leave the house; reminded me of Boy Scouts, where we packed dryer lint in out kits because it made such great tinder. Never thought about it making great tinder while still in the dryer!
